The Trouser Trolley

I’ve never been much of a fashion guru. I much prefer comfort over style which might explain some of the looks I got from the Russian women during our 2 trips, or their audible gasps when I dared wear sneakers rather than stiletto heals. I do like to look presentable but I’m far from keeping up with the latest fads. My first priority when I get home from work is to gladly trade in the burdensome “professional” wardrobe for my PJ’s (or “lounge pants”), and fuzzy slippers.

So when Norm’s mom gave me 2 rolling trouser trolleys a few weeks ago, each with the capacity to hold 15 pairs of pants, I was certain that I’d never be able to fill one with just my clothes alone. In fact, I laughed to myself thinking Norm & I could share one of these rollie things and maybe even have a hanger or two left over. Judy’s timing was great though because a few days before, our closet literally self imploded. Seems the genius who built our closet system only nailed it into the drywall – nothing was screwed into the studs. When we realized this, we were actually surprised it held up as well as it did for 3 years. We did our best to fix things but honestly we’ll need to do a better job at it sometime in the (hopefully not near) future. The welcome addition of the new trouser trolleys means less weight on the now questionable closet system. So as I’m cleaning up the mess from the self imploded closet, I start making piles:
- summer clothes that, sadly, can go into a plastic storage bin for a few months
- clothes that can go to Goodwill for whatever reason
- jeans and pants for the trouser trolley thing

And so on. Before I know it, the pile for the trouser trolley is H.U.G.E. Where in the world did I get all these pants and jeans? Why do some still have price tags on them?

Then it hit me…the disproportionate size between the Goodwill pile and the trolley pile. And yet I’ve had the nerve to complain to Norm umpteen times that I supposedly have “nothing to wear.” Not only could I have filled BOTH trolley’s on my own if I wanted to, some of that stuff had never been worn or even had the tags removed.

Feeling somewhat selfish and very embarrassed, I found my thoughts drifting towards “N” – Ilya’s birthmom. I actually think of (and THANK) “N” each day, but I hadn’t allowed myself to consider the enormity of her situation until that moment. There I was, sitting amidst 30+ pairs of jeans/pants, while somewhere in Russia, “N” and her sister are living a daily struggle just to survive. Their concerns don’t lie in what outfit they will wear that day, if their earrings match their sweaters, which boots look best, or if they have enough pairs of pants to fill one or two trouser trolleys. Instead, they are concerned with where and when they will get their next meal, how they will stay warm in the brutal Russian winter, finding a job and perhaps even finding a place to live… They have none of my luxuries but they do have each other and for that I am grateful.

I can’t help but wonder why it is that I am so fortunate. So blessed. So lucky. So privileged. While at the same time, “N” and sadly so many others face such hardships. I have not sacrificed much in my life. Yet, I have been immeasurably blessed by N’s sacrifice. Her amazing, beautiful, loving, funny and intelligent baby boy has been entrusted to us. It is our honor to call him our son, and it is her selfless act that allows us to do so.

How selfless was I as I shopped for those 30+ jeans and pants, and later complained I had nothing to wear? How selfless was I as I made the small pile for Goodwill? Honestly, not very. You know why? Well, it’s because at the time my thoughts were more focused on the tax benefit than on the person who might benefit from my donation…a person who may be struggling through daily life, yet has the ability to remain as selfless as “N”. Perhaps that person has touched someone’s life as “N” as touched my own.

As much as I want to both thank and help “N”, I cannot. What I can do, though, is try my best to honor her and the gift she has given us. There is a special envelope sitting in the branches of our Christmas tree with her name on it, and a similar one will be there each Christmas from this point forward. She may never know it is there, or what its contents are, but Ilya will. This year there are 3 pieces of paper in that envelope. One is the Goodwill slip, the donation made in her honor and it will NOT appear on my taxes for 2008. The second piece of paper is a donation to Hope Alive, once again made in her honor. The final piece of paper is a letter from one mom to another, from me to her, thanking her, telling her what an amazing son we share, his likes and dislikes, the progress he has made, his habits. It’s an overview of his nearly 7 months home and I so wish she could actually receive this envelope. Oh, I nearly forgot. There is a 4th piece of paper - - a sample of Ilya’s artwork from daycare. So preciouis and sweet, any mom would be proud.

So my closet is nice and tidy now, and a lot less cluttered as is my conscience. I never strived to need 30 hangers for pants alone. However, this has reminded me one of the things I DO strive for, which can be found in James 1:27:
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

The Great Christmas Card Debacle of '08

Create your very own custom Christmas cards with adorable photos of your adorable kiddo - GREAT!!

Visit Staples to have them print and cut said custom Christmas cards - sounds great ONLY if there isn't a language barrier and your so called "Print Specialist" knows exactly what size you want him/her to print...which is about 4.75 x 6.75. Purchase (50) 5x7 envelopes expecting them to be just cozy enough for your lovely Christmas cards which will supposedly be ready in 2 hrs. Head to Starbucks, all is well!

Return to Staples later that day only to find the "print specialist" has printed your custom Christmas cards as miniature wallet size. Grrrr.... But you can't make a scene because, well, it's not very nice or mature, right? Not to mention they're still holding your thumbdrive hostage, which was like handing over your first adopted anyway...if nothing else, you MUST get your thumbdrive back.

Wait a few days to calm down, because really, should one get that stressed over Christmas cards?? Visit Staples Round II and hope a different "print specialist" is on staff, which is the case BUT their machine is broken. Grrrr....back to Starbucks.

Visit Staples Round III - different printer person but not a "specialist", machine is fixed, told there shouldn't be any problems and you'll receive a call when the order is ready. Twenty-four hours later, you find out the job hasn't been started because they cannot figure out how to print anything. WHAT?? Oh, wait a second...they're not a print "specialist." My bad, I expected too much I suppose.

4 hours later, get a call from the specialist that your cards are done, finally, and they are the size originally requested. Yippee!! Still feeling bad, so take a dose of Nyquil and call it a night.

This evening, still feeling the effects of the Ny@uil, you decide to start afixing the address labels and stuffing/sealing the envelopes. All 50 are complete but you realize you need just a handful more. As you explain to your loving husband exactly which envelopes to buy from Staples and where they are located in the store, you pick up an addressed/stuffed/sealed envelope to use as an example. Your husband starts to snicker a little, then snorts, and you get really angry because he's obviously not paying attention to how important these envelopes really. Men!

And then you see it...the reason for all the snorting and snickering...the horrible result of combining Ny@uil with the great Christmas card debacle of '08. On the envelope in your hand, you've somehow managed to place the return address label where the delivery label should go, and the delivery label where the return label should go. Frantically you start going through your stack of 50 and realize THEY ARE ALL WRONG!!

Now come on - - it really shouldn't be this complicated, should it?! Stupid Ny@uil...

Oh, and if you're one of the 50+ receiving a card from us, you WILL ooh and awe over it, and you WILL like them and be impressed with the creativity and time it took to make these! :-)

Happy Holidays!

Kreative Blogger Award!!

So I log on to Susan's blog
And what do I see?
A Kreative Blog Award nomination
for little ol' MEEEE!

Go ahead and clap. I know you all want to! :-)

Thanks Susan! Here are the rules for the Kreative Blogger Award:

List six things that make you happy. Pass the award along to six more bloggers. Do not give the typical answers and go for the less obvious, as you all know that family, friends, God, etc would be on the list.

Without further adieu and in no particular order:

1. Vegetable Platters. Watch out if you're at a party or get-together with me and there are vegetable platters within a 5 block radius. It won't be pretty and I don't share but boy am I a happy camper when I park myself by the veggies and snarf 'em down in record time!

2. Chocolate! I don't think further explanation is needed, is it?

3. Reading the letters my family and friends sent me 14 years ago when I left home to join the Air Force. My seestor, Robyn, assigned family members a day of the week to write to me so that I would have at least one letter at every mail call. It was awesome and I still have each of those letters. They were/are a great source of comfort and entertainment. Thanks Rob, Daddy & everyone who wrote!

4. Making fun of myself. I have plenty of material to go on, trust me!!

5. Animal Rescue. I've been an animal rescue volunteer since 2001 and it has been such a wonderful experience. There are many difficult cases I've been involved with, but once the pets get to safety and in their furever families, the tears and frustrations are all but forgotten.

6. Hiking in the fall. All I can say is BEAUTIFUL!

I award the following 6 creative bloggers with the Kreative Blog Award - CONGRATULATIONS!

1. Becky
2. Stacy
3. Michelle
4. Kim (I've always loved your header!)
5. Rachel
6. Amy

Sponsored by "S"

Slacker - Since the "birth" of my blog, I don't think I've ever gone 8 days without writing. No wonder I've felt this odd sense of...loss...lately. I've missed my blog and yours if you have one that I know about. (Speaking of which, if you have a blog I don't know about, please enlighten me! I love following other people's stories). I'm guilty of not only being slacker writer, but a slacker stalker as well.

I do have good reason though, because "S" is also for:

Sick - really, really sick. Me, not Cubby - although he has had the sniffles a few times and has had to do his breathing treatments again. I've mentioned in a few posts that I hadn't been feeling well but what I didn't say was that this has been going on pretty much nonstop since the day after Ilya's baptism (September 28). The past 4 days is the longest stretch of feeling somewhat human that I've enjoyed since that beautiful September day, so I really hope it lasts!

Stress and Sleep - one I've had too much of, and the other I'm seriously lacking. Can you guess which is which? :-) Some of the stress is self imposed, most I have absolutely no control over but both I need to "get over" if I want the blessed (and much needed) sleep to return!

Okay, those were a few of the negatives. If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know I say there is something positive in every situation. To honor that, "S" represents...

Surprise! Earlier this week, Norm had a huge surprise in store for me. Ilya & I got home expecting to go through the normal routine, only to find out daddy had other plans in mind. He had drawn a super hot, melt the skin off your body, bath for me and let me relax as long as I wanted/needed while he cooked dinner and enjoyed Ilya duty. He called me on the way home to get my ETA, so he would know exactly when to start running the water for me. He even went so far as to dig out the aromatherapy candles and have them lit when I walked into the bathroom to change. Very nice, much needed and truly appreciated.

Super Sweet Moments - Cubby surprised me with some really sweet moments this week as well. Adoptive parents wait for moments like these, and hold tightly to them when they do happen. I hope I can give these moments the justice they deserve, because they really are very special.

The first happened when Cubby surprised me with an unsolicited, non bribed hug. He was sitting in my lap watching TV, and all of a sudden he just turned and looked at me straight in the eyes. We stayed like that for a few seconds, and I told him I loved him and gave him a little peck on his nose. He threw his little arms around my neck and latched on more tightly than he ever has. It was very, very sweet and I got tears in my eyes. But the best part was that he didn't just squeeze my neck and let go. No, instead he stayed like that for a full 5 minutes. (I was watching the clock because I was waiting for a call.) I thought for sure he had fallen asleep but he was wide eyed the entire time. Wide eyed and content just to be in his momma's arms. I held him in that hug until he leaned back and looked me in the eyes again, and this time he gave me a peck on the nose, then snuggled back into the crook of my arms and started watching TV again.

The second happened when I dropped him off at daycare yesterday. I rarely, if ever, wear a skirt because of this lovely tatoo I have on my right ankle. (When you're 20, you really don't have a concept of just how long "forever" or "permanent" is!) I digress...for whatever reason I did wear a skirt to work yesterday. When I dropped Cubby off, his classmates kept coming up & touching my legs while I was trying to take his coat off. Ilya was NOT happy at all with their interest in me. He started yelling "No No No! Me Momma!!" Then he politely (not so much!) pushed the other kids away from me and latched on to my legs, all the time saying "Me Momma! Me Momma!" This is the first time he's identified me as his, and I soaked in every minute of it. Today the first thing out of his mouth when he saw he classmates was "Me Momma!!" followed by a huge hug!

Sap - Yeah, I am a sap because reliving these two events with my son has me all teary eyed again!

There's more to share with you after taking an 8 day sabbatical, but I'll sign off for now. I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! I'll do better writing and blog stalking everyone!

Toodles!

Overdue

Unfortunately Cubby’s 1st Thanksgiving wasn’t exactly what we had hoped it would be, but it was a great day for bonding nonetheless. Poor little guy slept in until 9am Thanksgiving morning, which was our first sign that he wasn’t feeling well. Normally he’s up between 7-7:30am. We checked on him a few times and he was sound asleep, so we just let him get the rest he obviously needed. Once he did wake up, he spent the next few hours throwing up, refusing food, and acting very lethargic (despite the 15 hrs of sleep he got). He had no other symptoms, no fever, etc., so we weren’t sure what was causing him to feel so bad. He just wanted to be held and cuddled, so that’s how we spent our morning.

His Gramps was working in Norfolk last week, so he stopped by the house around 11am. He brought Cubby a Sit & Spin, which perked our boy up a little bit for a few minutes and we were able to get a few cute photos of him having fun. Noon rolled around and he was out like a light, so he missed the wonderful Thanksgiving lunch his Grandma prepared. He slept until 4pm and was finally able to get a little food in his system around 5:30. Most of that 1.5 hrs was spent being held by mommy, daddy or grandma. Gramps headed back to Norfolk around 2pm, so Cubby didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to him.

Fortunately he woke up Friday feeling a little better, but then mommy started feeling sick AGAIN and I’ve been miserable ever since. Hence, the lack of posting on my part. Sorry folks! Next post will include photos of Cubby’s first Thanksgiving.

The enormous blessings in our lives far outweigh Cubby’s first Thanksgiving not going exactly as I envisioned it. I have so many thoughts about all we have to be thankful for, and it deserves a post of its own. So, I’ll end this post for now. I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving Holiday!

WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH CUBBY!
HAPPY 20 MONTHS!!!
